(ongoing) Identity has become more and more nuanced with mass exposure to cultures through media. To be able to construct and present oneself, the medium of style and fashion is open to all social strata. The following project looks at the male youth from low income areas of Kolkata, India. Using fashion they hope to create the possibility of interpersonal connections with other like-minded people and escape their socio-economic reality. The project was initiated during Foundry Photojournalism Workshop (July 15-21, 2018). I approached those whose hairstyles and fashion sense stood out to me and got consent from my subjects to photograph them. The name ‘Fancy Market’ is inspired by a wholesale garment mall located next to Kidderpore Dock in Kolkata.
